acrylics.

So, this was basically my first im ever painting. I never really had the opportunity to experiment since I didn't take art classes in high school. It was a little intimidating, but I definitely enjoyed learning. Here are a few based on some of my photos from before. The green backgrounds on both didn't read well on the scan. Oh well. Enjoy :)

colored pencil.

I fell in love with colored pencils recently. I had no idea that something I associated with the 5th grade could produce such realistic renderings. It takes a lot of time...slowly layering and burnishing (a fancy term for slowly shading until the waxes and pigments mix and form a solid layer on the paper) for about 4 hours each drawing...but completely worth it. I hope to do some more soon, but here are my first few.

I really wanted to capture the dramatic lighting from the orgininal photo in this one, so I decided to use just white on gray. His right arm was getting lost though, So I added the block of color...I love how it turned out.

This one was based off of a photo of my friend, Newell. She has some of the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen and I wanted to capture one close-up.

photography from 8-09

Our first assignment of the year - we were set loose to explore the world through a camera lense. The class is structured such that the images we produced during this week then became the basis of our subjects for the explorations of different media - graphite, charcoal colored pencil, acrylics, water colors, markers, etc.

It was open ended, but suggested that we take pictures of people and the human body,

natural and manmade still life scenes,

architectural elements,

and nature.

I had a great time playing around with the things I could achieve with a camera for a week...I wish I had the time to do it regularly.
