mixed media

newspaper + water color + pen + charcoal

A mixed-media experiment? I really wanted all the values in the face to be made up of bold-ed words from the paper, but had to add lines in the eyes and other details cause you couldn't tell what was going on. Still interesting, though, and might be the basis for my final presentation.

photorealism from 09-09

This project was to recreate a photo of an interior space of our choice, using graphite pencils and powder.

I chose Tadao Ando's Church of Light in Osaka, Japan, built in '89. This small Christian church amazes me. The play of light (hense the name) creates an intense, dramatic affect in the church's main interior space, and Osaka continues to play with light penetration and perception throughout the rest of the building. Check it out sometime if you get a chance.

Here's my rendering - this particular angular view of the main interior space intrigued me. I loved working on this project...even if it did take forever.

These are other views of the Church, obviously not taken by me.

watercolors.

A few more feeble attempts at watercolor. More experiments to come I'm sure.

I thought the half-face was going to make a much more interesting composition than it actually did. I think it feels a little odd/incomplete?

I love the contrast going on in this one. I think I may do a series of larger ones with hands in different positions...we shall see.

I also bought a small ceramic egg with legs at Hobby Lobby the other day. Paintings of him in acrylic to come. :)

birdies.

My first little dabble in watercolor. The birds I freehanded on top with charcoal. I'm really pleased with how they turned out as a composition. Simple, but I love it.
